The Eastern Shore of Maryland is famous for many things: rolling farmland, incredible sunsets, rock fish and crab cakes, and of course the steamed Maryland Blue Crab. But did you know that the area is also known as the Goose Hunting Capital of the World?! Or one of them anyway. That’s right, our Eastern Shore Inn is right in the middle of a major flyway, or migration route, for Canada Geese. More than 1.5 million geese and ducks travel through here each winter. Folks come to Kent County from all over the country to hunt geese, as well as duck, wild turkey, pheasant, quail, rabbit and deer. The hunting seasons overlap a bit, but the geese are definitely a big draw for most hunters.
Back in 1987, the same year that our Eastern Shore Inn opened its doors, an article by Tom Fegley in the Lehigh Valley’s Morning Call newspaper described the area perfectly:
Indeed, the most striking aspect of a first-timer’s stay in…. Eastern Shore towns is the recognition of their pride in maintaining the traditions of the settlers to this land – largely the traditions of hunting, fishing, farming and a reliance on the Chesapeake Bay. Clothing stores, sporting goods shops, specialty stores, art and photo galleries, clothing shops, restaurants and hotels all reflect the love of geese and ducks and the sporting tradition so deeply embedded in the region. Ducks, geese and swans will be found in one form or another in practically every business place. Decoys, carvings, artwork, photographs and decorative motifs of waterfowl are everywhere.
26 years later, and it is exactly the same.
Here at the Brampton Bed and Breakfast Inn on Maryland’s upper Eastern Shore, we have been hosting hunters for decades. A bed and breakfast is not necessarily what most people think of when they think of hunters’ accommodations, but why not? After a cold day in a blind, what could be better than coming back to our welcoming Eastern Shore inn for a hot shower and maybe a glass of sherry to take the inner chill off.
We offer comfortable rooms with wood-burning fireplaces and an early full breakfast. Yes, that would be at 4:30 am if needed. Check out our reasonable hunting special. Please give us a call 410-778-1860 to discuss your needs and we’d be happy to set you up with one of the several guides in the area, many of whom are practically right in our back yard. But not literally, so there’s no need to panic!
